Grandpa and Grandma Perkins Visit: Pompano Beach

The following day of Grandpa and Grandma Perkins' visit was Sunday, so in order to try our best at keeping the sabbath day holy, our trip to the beach was for playing in the sand only.  We had an enjoyable Sunday at church and then drove up to Pompano Beach to relax and watch the sunset.  Daxton is in heaven with anything sand and ocean related and had a blast all afternoon.

It was such a relaxing afternoon.  Daxton had so much fun playing with daddy, grandpa, and grandma.  He especially loved building sand castles.  Daxton would spend all day at the beach if I let him...and I often do!

Once again showing how hard it is to get a toddler to look at the camera...

I love this picture of Dallas and his daddy.

We found a random ball in the sand and it became an immediate game of soccer/hackysack.  Daxton just loved chasing after daddy and grandpa.

Trying desperately to get a mommy and son picture...to no avail!
He's my crazy little buddy!

Just a few of my favorite shots from our afternoon at Pompano Beach...

Love his little footprints!

One of my absolute favorites and a picture of the week.
I love his little fingers and toes in the sand.

Finally a successful family picture!

This pretty much sums up perfection in my eyes...
Daxton's cute little face looking at daddy relaxing on a gorgeous beach as the sun goes down.
I really do LOVE living here!
(And remind you, this was at the end of January!)

Grandpa and Grandma Perkins Visit: Everglades Holiday Park

Our first family adventure we took, while Grandpa and Grandma Perkins were in town visiting from Casper, Wyoming at the end of January, was to the Everglades Holiday Park.  It was pretty funny, since we had literally just been there the previous week with the Bitter Family, but it's not a trip to Florida without seeing some gators!  On our drive over, I snapped this quick shot of Daxton wearing daddy's hat, but it totally looks like Daxton is taking his first "selfie!"

Daxton had an even better time with Grandpa and Grandma than he did with his parents.  He sat on Grandma's lap, ate goldfish, watched the birds and plants pass by, and then loved watching the gators when we found them.

Like I mentioned before, the Everglades has such a unique beauty. It really is peaceful once the air boat motor turns off.

Our tour guide was especially awesome this time and very knowledgeable about all the different wildlife and plant life.  He stopped the boat right next to a small island inhabited by several birds.  Then he started feeding them little bits of popcorn, which brought the birds even closer.  It was so neat to see them up close with the detailing on their feathers.  Daxton loved every second!

Just some of the beauty found in the Everglades...

We were able to see a few gators this time, one hiding in the bushes along an island and another coming very close to the boat.  It's still so crazy to me at how well camouflaged they are in the water!
Watching the gator swim around the boat...

On our way back to the dock, we saw an enormous iguana in one of the trees.  Can you find it in the pictures below?
Another example of awesome camouflage!

The gator wrestling show, put on by the Gator Boys, was especially awesome this time.  I had never seen the guy on the TV show, but I haven't been keeping up with the show now that I live in Florida.  He mentioned that he was a volunteer on the weekends.  I have to say that he not only put on the best wrestling show I had ever seen while living here, but he seemed much more knowledgable as well.

We of course had to get a picture of Grandpa and Grandma with a baby gator!  Daxton was super happy to hold another gator as well.
It was another fun adventure at the Everglades Holiday Park!

Grandpa and Grandma Perkins Visit: Hanging at Home

It was a very hard decision this year, when we chose to not travel home for the holidays.  So when Dallas' parents called to let us know that they wanted to come out for a quick visit at the end of January, we were super excited!  Dallas adores his father and it's always so much fun to see his face light up when they're together again.  But even more than that, Dallas adores watching his daddy interact with his son.  It took Daxton about a minute to become besties again with Grandpa Perkins.  They were running through the house, wrestling, playing soccer, doing strange yoga moves, and wearing pants on top of their heads, all while Daxton giggle uncontrollably.  It was pretty much amazing to watch!

He thought he was especially funny, when he sat behind grandpa and started to run his toes through grandpa's hair!

We decided to save all our Christmas presents they sent and open them when they were in town.  Daxton was more than ecstatic to open additional presents and I loved the excuse to keep up our Christmas tree a few days longer.  I'm sure grandma and grandpa Perkins liked watching his reactions to each of the presents.

GG (great grandma Marline) sent us a very generous check to spend on Daxton for Christmas, so we saved those gifts as well.  He had a blast with all his new toys!

By far, the best gift he got (and still plays with on a daily basis today) was the truck from grandma and grandpa Perkins.  He takes it everywhere and even sits in it sometimes while he watches his shows.  It was the perfect gift for our little man!
Thanks again grandpa and grandma!

While Dallas' parents were in town, one of the nights we were able to sneak away for a date night.  Dallas' work had a belated holiday party down at the American Airlines Arena in Miami where the Miami Heat play.  It was pretty cool to be down on the basketball court and dance like a crazy highschooler again.  It made me feel young :)
We were also able to take our pictures with the championship trophy, although we were not allowed to touch it.  In fact they had a guard who's entire job was to make sure no one laid a finger on it!  We had a great night hanging out with Dallas' coworkers, eating great food, and enjoying the beauty of Miami.

Native Village

Throughout the past few months of us living in South Florida, our church ward has had incredible sets of missionaries.  There are six missionaries assigned to our ward (2 Creole speaking Elders, 2 English speaking Elders, 2 Spanish speaking Sisters.)  With the new temple just being dedicated in our area, missionary work has been on fire as of late.  It's been a lot of fun to get to know these missionaries and feel their testimonies of our Savior.  I posted about Christmas Eve with several of them that you can read about here.  Towards the end of January the sister missionaries asked if Daxton and I would want to join them on one of their "P-days" (missionary term for their preparation day.)  Sister Daines was going to be headed home at the beginning of February and she wanted to check out a local preserve called "Native Village" before finishing her mission.  Of course I jumped at the offer.  I'm always up for a new adventure!

The Native Village is a small preserve; a living museum and cultural center to show native wildlife found in Florida and how the early Seminole Native Americans lived.  The entrance fee was quite low and we were able to get our own tour guide to take us around.  Daxton was a bit of a stinker throughout the entire morning, which made for a VERY tired mommy by the end of our adventure.

Posing with Sister Daines and Sister Merrill

The trails were roughly maintained, which I liked.  It made everything blend into the nature around it.  Daxton had a blast looking at all the different fish, frogs, and other wildlife.  He also loved running up and down the trails and climbing fences; scaring mommy half to death!

There was no one else there but us, so we got to ask tons of questions, take our time, and have several hands on experiences with the wildlife.  Daxton's face below was right after he was introduced to an iguana for the first time.  At least he's still afraid of some reptiles!

Some of the beautiful reptiles we were able to interact with...including baby gators with no tape on their mouths!

There were several different enclosures for alligators of various ages and sizes.  There was supposed to be a gator show, but the main gator was not cooperating and kept hiding in the water.  We finally told the man we didn't need to see it so the gator could continue sleeping.
What was crazy was how quickly this massive gator became invisible in the murky water.  It further testified that you do NOT go into murky water while living in Florida!

Daxton got a kick out of watching all the gators.  Although, he also got a kick out of trying to stick his hands through the fence...once again scaring his mommy half to death!

A little nerve wracking that the tiny fence was the only thing separating Daxton from those hungry gators...
He is quite yummy looking!

There were also lots of turtles and tortoises for Daxton to look at.  He could actually reach down and pet their shells, which our tour guide said was ok.  His favorite though, was when a random bunny came hopping through, stole the tortoise's lettuce, and then hopped away.

Afterwards, our tour guide picked out a baby gator for us to hold.  Sister Daines had a bit of fun with Sister Merrill's fear of gators!

Kisses!

Daxton, once again, had a blast with the baby gators.  He kept playing with it's toes and even leaned over to give it a big kiss at one point.  This age is so much fun!  I love experiencing things with him and watching his eyes light up.  He's a tiny sponge of learning right now and I'm loving every minute of it!
Kisses and playing with it's toes...
My own little "Gator Boy"
It was such a fun adventure with the sister missionaries.  I'm so glad they thought to invite Daxton and I.  Hopefully his crazy antics weren't too distracting for them!
