New Zealand Reunion: Bay Cruise

Day 3 continued...

After spending a fun morning paddle boating at Golden Gate Park, we headed down to the Pier 39 for our afternoon cruise.  I found a great deal on Groupon, from the Blue and Gold Fleet, for an hour long cruise around the bay.  It left from Pier 39, circled west along the marina and Chrissy Field beach, then under the Golden Gate Bridge.  After the Golden Gate Bridge the cruise circled around Alcatraz Island and then back to Pier 39.  It was a great way to see San Francisco, Fort Point, Golden Gate Bridge, Saulsalito, Alcatraz, and the Bay bridge.  We also lucked out with a gorgeous day, even after having been so foggy that morning.

Views around Pier 39 as our boat was leaving the dock.
I clearly remember the first time I saw the Auckland Harbor in New Zealand.  It was January 2003 (right in the middle of their summer) and the harbor was packed with gorgeous white sails.  I quickly found out that Auckland was nicknamed the "City of Sails."  It also helped that Auckland was hosting the America's Cup so there was a larger number of sailboats than normal.  San Francisco is the one city that has reminded me of my dear Auckland.  There have been several times where I have visited the San Francisco bay and have seen sail upon sail floating in the water.  It's also exciting since San Francisco will be hosting America's cup in the next few months.  So it's no surprise that while we were out on our cruise we saw several gorgeous white sails glistening on the water.

Some of my favorite pictures as we started to head towards the Golden Gate Bridge...

After sailing under the Golden Gate Bridge, our boat circled east around Alcatraz Island.  It was fun to see Alcatraz from a different perspective than usual.
After circling around Alcatraz, our boat headed back to dock at Pier 39.  Again we had amazing views of all the different sailboats.  We even saw over 10 dolphin throughout our cruise.  A pretty rare sight for the bay which made me a very happy girl!
